How I Work
As a queer individual with a chronic illness, I’m passionate about helping others face the physical and mental adjustments that come with changes in health and identity. If you’re struggling with a new chronic health diagnosis, substance use disorders, anxiety, depression, or a history of trauma, I’d love to join you in working through these issues.
My approach is transparent, collaborative, holistic and trauma-informed, which includes a blend of insight work and skills.
I draw strongly from Existential therapy, as well as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which is an evidence-based approach to managing overwhelming feelings, communicating with others, and provides coping skills that validate the connection between mind and body regarding mental health. I have seen DBT help clients with chronic health issues, as the skills can help us with strong anxiety or fear, communicate our changing needs, and manage fatigue or pain. I also integrate expressive arts therapy, for clients who want to break up talk therapy with writing, drawing, or painting exercises that help with self regulation, processing, and introspection.
A note on identity: I can recall the huge emotional burden my chronic illness caused when first diagnosed, and having a therapist who specialized in chronic illness helped me feel less alone and more in control of what I could change and manage. I want to pass that on to others. In addition, as a queer individual, I am passionate about providing a safe, validating, and gender affirming place for queer clients.
Though my primary speciality is treating chronic illness and adjusting to changes in health, I also have experience working with clients dealing with substance use disorder, anxiety, depression, grief, agoraphobia, ADHD and autism, Dissociative Identity Disorder, and complex trauma.
My Approach
I may be a good fit for you if:
- You appreciate collaboration, transparency, and being given practical therapeutic tools
- Would like the option to be creative in therapy sessions
- Thrive in a safe space to vent or speak without judgment
I may not be a good fit for you if:
- You prefer a ‘tough love approach’ and want a more assertive therapist
- Would like to be given direct advice from you therapist, instead of collaborating
- Require in person therapy
Outside of Therapy
I spend free time with friends, family, my cat, and indulging in creative interests: playing piano, painting, and drawing.
